- Abstract
Public aid, old age, poverty... What could be more marginal than the public aid nursing homes for the elderly in 19th century Brussels ? And yet... Analysis of the archives of Brussels' General Council of Nursing Homes and Aid (Conseil général des Hospices et Secours) sheds new light on the history of the elderly and their institutionalization. Several models of caretaking are at work and residents experience their internment in different ways. The margins that they represent become relative and allow us to question anew the history of the old and of their welfare.
