- Abstract
Hydatid disease (HD) is a cyclo-zoonotic parasitic infection and, like other sheep raising areas it is endemic in Kashmir. In this retrospective study of 13 years, we present our experience on the diagnosis of usual and unusual sites of primary HD. Between 1996 and 2008, 212 cases of HD were received and constitute the subjects of this study. The age of these patients ranged between 6 and 65 years (mean 32 years). Liver HD was the commonest site followed by lung HD in these patients. Other rare sites of HD like brain, aorta, kidney, muscle, bone, pleura and subcutaneous tissue were also encountered. Investigations performed included serological tests, eosinophil count and relevant radiological studies. Our report suggests that a combination of various investigative modalities with a high index of suspicion as well as histopathological examination is necessary in establishing the correct diagnosis. In this paper we present pathologic findings of HD in some uncommon sites besides the liver and lung, as based on our experiences.
