- Abstract
The article discusses early modern European and American cultural ideas about swimming, focusing on the thoughts of scientist and political theorist Benjamin Franklin. The author comments on the books "De Arte Natandi" by English theologian Everard Digby, later translated into English as "A Short Introduction for to Learne to Swimme," and "L’Art de nager," by French author Melchisedec Thevenot.
