- Abstract
This article discusses the influence of classical forms on 17th-century colonial poetry produced in the New World, including English poetry from Virginia and Newfoundland and Dutch poetry from New Netherland and Dutch Brazil. Poetic treatments of three themes are discussed: imaginings of the New World after discovery but prior to settlement; propaganda materials from early colonies; and war poetry. Works, including translations of classical poetry, are discussed by English poets such as Michael Drayton, Robert Hayman, and William Vaughan, and Dutch poets such as Franciscus Plante.
