- Abstract
This paper presents results from a study on students' refl ections on simulated social work interviews. I am interested in how students perceive desirable characteristics of social workers and professional interaction. The data consists of students' written self-refl ections and oral feedback to others concerning their performance in the exercise. The data was analysed by using category analysis and various conversation analytical devices. The analysis revealed two powerful communication formats that are considered relevant in social work. The fi rst is called "interview format" and the second "narration format". In the interview format, the social worker adopts the role of questioner and the client the role of the answerer. In the narration format, the client is positioned as a narrator and the social worker confi nes herself to the role of an empathetic listener. These communication formats serve diff erent professional and institutional purposes and therefore the social worker has to have an ability to move situationally between them.
