- Title
Prophecy and Masculinities: The Case of the Qur'anic Joseph.
- Authors
De Sondy, Amanullah
- Abstract
The article looks at issues of sexuality, gender, and ethics in the Qur'anic story of the prophet Joseph. According to the author, the Qur'ān does not condemn the mutual love and attraction felt by Joseph and Zulaykha, the wife of his father figure al-Aziz, but rather their negative social effects. In Islamic tradition, it is suggested, infringing on the rights of other individuals would also be a violation of the expected submission to God. Other topics include modesty, masculinity, and the relationship between Muslim and non-Muslim societies.
