- Abstract
Due to considerable gains and losses of seats at constituency-level, the German federal election 2021 qualifies as a suitable example for the research of voting behaviour. This paper analyses under which conditions constituencies can be considered ›safe‹ and how re-entering of incumbents can affect these results. The study shows that especially contested electoral districts indicate incumbency effects and national trends. In addition, the allocation of constituencies to East or West Germany and their settlement structure are important influencing factors. The paper also considers the personal impact of candidates and thus creates a candidate quotient of first and second votes.
