- Abstract
German political science has so far largely neglected Machiavelli's comedy La Mandragola. This is surprising, considering that in this drama Machiavelli gives a practical insight into his political anthropology and the techniques of self-assertion which are the uniting themes behind his main political works, the Prince and the Discourses on Livy, despite their fundamentally different outlook on principalities and republics. The essay tries to fill in this gap and will start by explaining the inner logic of the comedy. The findings will then be put in relation to the political works. It is argued that not only does La Mandragola demonstrate how to be successful in pursuing one's self-defined goals using the adequate remedies needed to this respect, but that the comedy further stages a covered-up transvaluation of values.
