- Abstract
The present study describes the main innovation management practices adopted by companies that develop software in the Federal District, Brazil, based on the theoretical assumptions established by Tidd, Bessant and Pavitt (2008) and Hansen and Birkinshaw (2007) models. We conducted a multiple case study with a qualitative approach, having four units of analysis. Evidence was collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed by techniques of content analysis and thematic coding with a priori categorization. Results point singular forms of innovation management for each case, showing low level of generalization. Although innovations are reported at different stages and aspects of the software development, the innovation process is presented in an unsystematic and mostly informal way. This work also reports low uniqueness concerning problems and obstacles to innovate mentioned in our cases. In short, it shows that companies do recognize the imperative to innovate as a mechanism for achieving or maintaining market competitiveness and, in order to meet it; they develop specific management practices and processes, often informal and low-structured.
