- Authors
MCGOWAN, KATHARINE A.
- Abstract
The article presents an overview of a protest in 1917 by two Indian bands in British Columbia, the Tsimshian of Port Simpson and Nisga'a on the Naas River, against their inclusion for military conscription under Canada's Military Service Act. The status of Native men under the Indian Act and eligibility for individual exemptions are mentioned. A historical analysis of the Indian Act's authority and the challenge of the Indian communities' Naas Agency to the Department of Indian Affairs concerning military draft is presented. Canadian colonialism, Aboriginal activism, and the influence of Christianity on the Native peoples are discussed. Attitudes toward landownership and Indian rights, resistance to enlistment, and actions taken by government in British Columbia are mentioned.
