- Abstract
The electronic industry has increasingly expanded its boundaries beyond the world. More specifically, the Brazilian cell-phones market registered a 24.5 percent growth in 2008, achieving remarkable 150 million mobile phones registered along the country. Concerned about the damages heavy metals found in nickel-cadmium batteries may cause, authorities created regulations over the use and disposal of batteries containing plumb or cadmium. Lithium-ions batteries, however, are not as hazardous as NiCd ones, and can be disposed in domestic bins (according to most legislations). The problem is therefore the volume of waste created by these products. One technically feasible solution is recycling them, recovering metals such as cobalt, aluminum and copper from empty batteries. Although this process is not profitable yet, this mostly depends on regulations over the theme to become economically feasible. Through Mineral Processing Unit Operations, this work demonstrates how to recover aluminum and copper from lithium ions batteries. By the end of the whole process, a large amount of metal is recovered, confirming the efficiency of the chosen processes.
