- Abstract
This paper presents a snap-shot of a highly successful student-initiated small-group performance task undertaken by first year generalist pre-service primary education students. The task formed a major component of the music segment of an arts course that was one of the core subjects in a four year Bachelor of Education degree. The extremely positive outcomes of the performance project are most powerfully demonstrated through the words of the tertiary students themselves, presented here through annotated excerpts of the reflections of the five members of one particularly diverse and articulate group of students. The paper posits that the pre-service teachers' genuine excitement about music, resulting from the development of their sense of themselves as composers and/or bands-on musicians in their own right (rather than as teachers/facilitators alone), together with their enhanced musical skills and confidence, augurs well for increasing the presence and effectiveness of music teaching in the generalist primary classroom.
