- Abstract
The article discusses the role of a best interest assessor (BIA), which was created by Great Britain's 2007 Mental Health Act. The BIA works to ensure that when a patient with mental illness or a severe learning disability lacks the mental capacity to give informed consent for mental health treatment as defined under the Mental Capacity Act, they will receive treatment that is in their best interest. Nurses and approved mental health professionals are eligible to become BIAs. INSET: 'I receive two or three referrals each week'.
