- Abstract
The article discusses the management of infective endocarditis (IE), a severe disease that primarily affects older individuals. Traditionally, intravenous antimicrobial therapy has been recommended for 2-6 weeks, but outpatient parenteral antimicrobial therapy (OPAT) has gained popularity as a cost-effective and convenient alternative. The POET study demonstrated that oral treatment was non-inferior to intravenous treatment in individuals with left-sided IE due to common gram-positive microorganisms. The Danish POETry study implemented this strategy in national guidelines, achieving a high level of adherence and demonstrating a lower 6-month mortality risk with oral administration. However, further research is needed to determine the best approach for completing treatment and address other unanswered questions.
