- Abstract
The disruptive changes associated with the Fourth Industrial Revolution necessitate a rethink of the relevance of conventional management concepts such as ‘sustainable competitive advantage’. To present the argument, this conceptual study used a dialectical approach. The researchers deconstructed the origin, definition, and underlying assumptions of the sustainable competitive advantage concept and subsequently analysed the impact of contemporary disruptive change drivers on the relevance of the concept. It was observed that the disruptive changes were repudiating the underlying assumptions, and therefore the relevance of sustainable competitive advantage was contested. Alternatives to sustainable competitive advantage rooted in complexity thinking are offered to navigate the contemporary complex business environment for long-term success.
