- Abstract
The article presents a mathematical method for modeling the behavior of materials which exhibit temperature-dependent step-like changes in viscosity. This is said to be relevant to the production of submicron-size fibers through nonisothermal melt spinning. A set of nonlinear equations is presented and it is shown how these can be used to derive information related to shear stress, surface tension, cooling, inertia and heating rates. The numerical solutions for a range of parameters are discussed in terms of draw ratio, linear stability and limit cycle behavior.
