The essay discusses the history of male prostitution. Topics include transsexuality practiced in male prostitution in the late 19th and early 20th century, straight male soldiers purchasing gay male prostitutes, and sexologists, such as Magnus Hirschfeld, Havelock Ellis, and Kurt Freund, research of the relationship between homosexuality and male prostitution. Other topics include male youth prostitutes, gay liberation in the 1970s, and affirmation of sexual identity.
