- Abstract
Inserted in the field of linguistic ideologies of bilingualism, this paper analyzes the conceptions of bilingualism in seven educational institutions in a city in southeastern Brazil, as well as the ideological discourses that underlie the pedagogical choice for bilingual education made by these schools. The study was developed from an exploratory search for recurring themes in the texts and images found on the Web page of the bilingual programs of these institutions. The materials were then interpreted using a critical discourse analysis approach. The results reveal three points in common to these schools: first, their bilingual programs reflect a fractal conception of bilingualism, treating the knowledge of the two languages separately and having monolingual standards as a reference; second, the material analyzed presents bilingualism as synonymous with a 21st century skill, essential for the insertion in the labor market and in the market of symbolic goods; finally, the idea of what it is to be bilingual is related merely to the command of the English language, reflecting ideological discourses aligned with globalization and the generation of material or symbolic profits in the linguistic context in which the language is inserted.
