- Abstract
The Mid-German Crystalline Zone (MGCZ) is a key region to decipher the evolution of the Variscides. Deformational processes in the Böllstein Odenwald as an integral part of the MGCZ have been studied in the past, but the exact time frame remained uncertain. Therefore, a study combining structural analysis and age dating (U-Pb on zircon) was carried out at the Weichberg quarry, where the contact between metagranitoid core and metasedimentary schist envelope of the Böllstein Odenwald is well exposed. Schist envelope rocks and Silurian granodioritic sills intruded therein show at least two folding phases: Recumbent tight to isoclinal folds are overprinted by upright gentle folds. A pegmatite dike, intruding at 411 ±2 Ma into the schist envelope rocks, crosscuts perpendicular to their main foliation and shows only a weak schistosity related to the isoclinal folding. Consequently, isoclinal folding must have been active before 411 ±2 Ma (Lower Devonian), but after the Silurian intrusion age of the granodiorite sills (ca. 423 Ma; Dörr et al. 2022). At Weichberg quarry the core is represented by a (meta)granite without isoclinal folding, intruding into the schist envelope at 404 ±2 Ma. Post-intrusive tectonic displacements along the contact between metagranite and metasediments are indicated by fold deformation directly above the contact and by dikes terminating at the contact. Deformations described in this work probably result from the collision of the MGCZ with the NW edge of the Saxothuringian Zone. Similarities with respect to intrusion age and deformation age/style can be found in other units within the European Variscides for example the Léon Domain (e.g. Faure et al. 2010) or the Ossa-Morena Zone (e.g. Simancas et al. 2001).
