- Abstract
The article discusses the history of the development of the automated teller machine (ATM), also known as the cash dispensing machine. According to the article, ATMs were developed as a result of collaborations between bankers and engineers during the mid-20th century and were first utilized in Europe. The article discusses the use of encryption keys and the Message Authentication Code (MAC) in enabling broad ATM networks, the development of online communication, and the role of electronics company IBM in the development of ATMs.
