- Abstract
The article discusses the origins of XIT Ranch in the Texas Panhandle, on land acquired from the state by a group of businessmen in 1882 in exchange for constructing a new capitol building in Austin. The partnership that undertook the project, consisting of Amos C. Babcock, John and Charles Farwell, and Abner Taylor, is discussed, as is the financing and logistics of the construction project. The 3-million acre tract that made up the cattle ranch is also described, as is the process of financing and developing it.
