Sir Anthony Musgrave and the Institute of Jamaica.
- Authors
SHEPHERD, VERENE A.
- Abstract
This article discusses some of the controversy that has been developing over the annual Musgrave Awards given by the Institute of Jamaica. There has been increasing sentiment by many, including award winners, over having the award named after Sir Anthony Musgrave, the colonial governor from 1877 to 1883. Musgrave was governor during a period when Great Britain ruled the island and there was no local representation in a government that used the same undemocratic practices that were used in the slavery era. The article presents information about Musgrave's term as governor.
