- Abstract
But neither Antoine nor Conde ultimately judged it prudent to do what Calvin and Beza thought they should. Two days before Calvin wrote this letter, Antoine and Conde submissively entered a heavily guarded Orleans. Believing that support for the Guises was more limited than it actually was, that the power of the house of Lorraine would crumble in the face of an impressive show of numbers, and that men could be raised from many parts of France to back Antoine in claiming what they believed to be his rightful leadership role in the king's council, they had thrown themselves into raising money for this project and urging Antoine to embrace it. Five From Lyon to Orleans N o sooner had Beza dispatched his letter of August 25 telling Calvin that the enterprise of Lyon needed to be called off, but that he hoped Navarre would embrace "our incompara- bly better plan", than two events at court completely scrambled the sit- uation.
