- Title
The Leave-Takers by Steven Wingate (review).
- Authors
Paredes, Rebecca
- Abstract
By the end of the novel both Jacob and Laynie are forced to face their demons and their imperfections - and it becomes clear that the only way for these people to love each other is to learn how to love their imperfect selves. The novel begins with Jacob and Laynie, two artists who met in Los Angeles, unofficially married, and broke up - only to cross paths four years later in South Dakota. Wingate invokes contrasts throughout the novel: in downtown Los Angeles, Jacob lives in a reclaimed locker factory called Smeltville, but he is forced to return home to Cocklebur Farm in East River, South Dakota.
