- Abstract
Between 1939 and 1960, there was a lively debate in Quebec concerning access to hospital services. Catholic Church, owner of the majority of hospital beds, advocated the implementation of a compulsory insurance system administered by private companies, and not by the State. To this day, Quebec historians have nearly forgotten to include in their studies private insurers' activity relative to health. It is by introducing such activity that this paper intends to shed new light on the positions of the Catholic Church in the hospital system, and on her views concerning hospitals' access democratization.
