The article focuses on the studies regarding the effects of hypoxia inducible transcription factor (HIF) pathway activation in insulin-producing beat cells in the pancreas. Results show that HIF activation leads to the impairment of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), reduced insulin secretion and whole-body glucose intolerance. Furthermore, defective insulin secretion observed in people with type 2 diabetes may be contributed by HIF activation.
