- Abstract
The author, an adult who was raised in the foster care system and came from an abusive family, discusses the idea of Family Privilege, which he describes as the emotional and developmental benefits of growing up in a stable family. Parents who provide psychological supports such as affection, emotional safety, and behavioral expectations are discussed, as well as benefits for children of stable families such as an easier transition to independence, the development of generosity, and the experience of mentors. Children's social skills and relationships are also discussed.
