Cytoplasmic metallochaperones like Atx1 in yeast acts by shuttling copper, a required cofactor in cellular enzymes, to various cellular sites for the assembly of copper-containing enzymes. The transfer of copper to target molecules must transcend the copper-chelation ability of the cytoplasm. Structural studies using NMR revealed a key step in copper ion trafficking to sites of use.
