- Abstract
The article offers information on the 50th anniversary celebration of the U.S. Supreme Court's judicial decision in the case of Gideon v. Wainwright, in which the Court ruled that state courts must provide a counsel to defendants in criminal cases who are unable to afford to pay for a lawyer under the Fourteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Topics discussed include the important decisions in other cases including the Batson v. Kentucky, Strickland v. Washington and Johnson v. Zerbst.
