- Abstract
This article focuses on the book "The Second Stage," by Betty Friedan. This paper has two aims. First, using the Rushing-Frentz Social Value Model (SVM) as a primary analytic tool, the rhetoric of the book is explained and critically assessed. The SVM seems especially useful for the analysis because it recognizes and explains motivations for social change that come not from the opponents of change but instead from value conflicts among the proponents themselves. The second part fits the five-part structure of the SVM to Friedan's work in attempt to explain the data and test the appropriateness of the model. The authors argue for an SVM-based view of rhetorical language in movements and assess "The Second Stage" as a social change rhetoric.
