- Authors
McDonough, Kelly
- Abstract
The article discusses the role of the "others" and the ideologies in the writings of Christopher Columbus and also in Iberian romance writings. As stated by other scholars, Iberian images of other cultures was directly impacted by previous encounters with diverse groups and disseminated by the popular music and poetry of the time. The author shows that in both the reconquest of the Iberian Peninsula and in the conquest of the Americas, the objectives were very similar in that they both intended on recapturing lands (in Columbus' case, this was originally the Far and Middle East) and spreading the holy religion of Catholicism.
