- Abstract
The article discusses the significance of studying the properties of matter in the U.S. According to the National Science Education Standards (NRC), the relationship between the properties of matter and its underlying structure is a major component of study for physical science in high school. While elementary-grade students study the properties of matter and the classification of substances using readily observable properties, middle-grade students are expected to develop sufficient knowledge to define and differentiate the properties of elements and compounds.
