- Abstract
This section introduces the articles featured in the May 2003 issue of the Journal for Juvenile Justice and Detention Services. Research articles in this edition are from Eastern Kentucky University, California State University at Chico, and East Carolina University. The first manuscript by May examines the causes of violent delinquency among youth and the effectiveness of policies designed to combat it. The findings of this research are both interesting and useful. The second manuscript by Dick, Geertsen, and Jones examines self-reported recidivism in Utah's teen courts. The article explores the impacts of various court disposition options; discusses substance abuse and prior multiple offenses as predictors of program failure, and provides policy implications for the teen court approach. The third manuscript by Sharpe tackles the ever-popular issue of gangs by examining the relationship between risk factors and gang membership based upon the age of the individual. The fourth article is a transcript of a keynote speech given by Paul DeMuro at a statewide juvenile justice conference in New Jersey. DeMuro's musings on leadership development and staff training are timeless concepts that are essential for all human service agencies and professionals to understand.
