The article focuses on the use of small fish species such as the zebrafish (Danio rerio) and medaka fish (Oryzias latipes) as model vertebrates in several research areas and explains why they have not been used in research. Topics discussed include identification and functional analysis of taste signaling molecules in small fish species, behavioral and physiological methods to quantify the taste preferences of fish species, and their use to the research on the neural circuits for taste signals.
