- Abstract
This paper focuses on analyzing the linguistic representation of positive basic emotions such as interest, joy, and surprise in German digital communication. The study aims to conduct a sociolinguistic experiment to uncover the characteristics of the linguistic representation of these positive basic emotions in German digital communication of a dialogic nature and to systematize the results of the investigation. The paper takes into account some background information and terms relevant to the study. Firstly, a brief overview of various lexical methods is provided, which correspond to the topic and objectives of the sociolinguistic experiment, linguistic studies, and language contact. Then, the theoretical background of digital communication is illustrated, highlighting its key features. After a brief presentation of the results of the sociolinguistic experiment, the collected evidence for the linguistic representation of positive basic emotions is analyzed and summarized. A specifically created corpus consists of 500 SMS and WhatsApp messages. The present study aims to expand research in the field of recent German digital communication. The outcomes of this study can serve as additional material for future investigations into nonverbal language tools such as emoticons or emojis.
