- Title
Hijraism: Jostling for a Third Space in Pakistani Politics.
- Authors
Pamment, Claire
- Abstract
This article describes the hijra communities of Pakistan. A hijra is a male who leaves the family during his adolescent years when he cannot disguise his female feelings. According to a guru, Pakistani families often force male children out of their homes when they notice signs of feminine behavior. Many hijras challenge the biological and social issues related to gender and get castrated in order to distinguish themselves from cross-dressers. They are guided by a guru who train them on community rituals and livelihood skills.
