- Abstract
The article analyzes the deployment and omnipresence of biometric technologies in the humanitarian sector, highlighting how they perpetuate forms of coloniality. The assumption that biometrics are necessary to combat fraud is questioned, and it is emphasized how the discourse on fraud perpetuates power dynamics and categorizes beneficiaries. In addition, the lack of clear norms and practices regarding the use of biometrics is mentioned, as well as the influence of Northern Global nations in funding the massive collection of biometric data. The mandatory use of biometrics in humanitarian contexts raises concerns about the genuine consent of affected communities. Overall, biometrics is an extractive and physically invasive technology that reproduces colonial practices.
