This article discusses the performance and historical impact of actor Ira Aldridge as the title character in William Shakespeare's play "Othello" on the Covent Garden stage in London, England on April 10, 1833. Aldrige's appearance marked the first time in the nineteenth century that a black actor had been granted a title role in a production as many blacks were kept below upper class status.
