AN ECHO OF KING JAMES IN JONSON'S BARTHOLOMEW FAIR.
- Authors

- Abstract
This article presents information about the play "Bartholomew Fair," written by Ben Jonson. A hitherto unnoticed allusion in the play may shed some light upon the relationship between this comedy and the views and tastes of Ben Jonson's greatest patron, King James. The title-page of the first edition of the play, reveals that the comedy was dedicated to King James, a fact largely ignored by scholars. Whether the dedication occurred before or after James's death in 1625, "Bartholomew Fair" is the only one of Jonson's stage plays dedicated to the King.
