- Title
A SURPLUS CORONATION IN DEKKER'S IF THIS BE NOT A GOOD PLAY.
- Authors
Gasper, Julia
- Abstract
The article focuses on the Act IV of Dekker's "If This Be Not A Good Play, the Devil Is In It." in which the devil Rufman reports to his master Lucifer about his success in corrupting King Alphonso of Naples. While reporting his success he used the word "crownde." This word does not fit the metaphor Rufman is using. Rufman's aim was to overthrow and destroy Alphonso's authority, not to uphold it. Crownde is an error for drownde. Drownde would be consistent with confound, and with water imagery that runs through the passage.
