- Abstract
When an Egyptian phenomenon pops up in need of clarification, they bring up Hegel and Greco-Roman mythology and continue to drift along in their blissful ignorance of the Egyptian content.... On the other hand, they have all been good at psycho-interpreting and psychoanalyzing.... Such a foolish mess is not worthy of Ibsen.) In this way, Larsen introduces his day of reckoning with the established school of Ibsen scholarship that has focused on I Peer Gynt i . However, Benneche announces from the very beginning that there is a "gåte" (Benneche [5], 02:24-02:30) [mystery, riddle] behind the play that "mange har forsøkt å løse" (Benneche [5], 02:43) [many have tried to solve], and that she has "en ny teori som setter hele karakteren i et nytt lys" (Benneche [5], 02:52-02:57) [a new theory that places the entire character in a new light]. Benneche justifies this connection by drawing upon the memoirs of Ibsen's friend, the Danish writer Vilhelm Bergsøe, I Ibsen på Ischia i (1907; Ibsen in Ischia), where he mentions an anecdote from the writing process of I Peer Gynt i , when Ibsen apparently exclaimed: "Ja, nu skal jeg arbejde, jeg føler mig som en stejlende Hingst, der skal springe" (Bergsøe [7], 160) [Yes, now I'll start working, I feel like a rampant stallion about to run]. Circular formulations like "Ibsen visste dette" [Ibsen knew this], "Ibsen har besvart mine spørsmål" [Ibsen has answered my questions], "Dikteren sier meg" [the Poet is telling me], "Ibsen må ha ment" [Ibsen must have meant], and "Ibsen har villet arrangere" [Ibsen wanted to arrange] (Larsen [22], 52, 80, 154, 203) show how speculative and self-confirming his narrative is, as they are used to give authority and to confirm points previously made by Larsen.
