- Abstract
The article describes a library program at the Passages Academy in District 79 of the New York City Department of Education, which is a school for incarcerated youth. The principal and librarians at the academy worked to obtain iPad tablet computers for the students with the help of the nonprofit group Literacy for Incarcerated Teens (LIT), and the author describes training librarians on how to use iPads, starting a pilot program to study how students used the iPads, and securing funding from the district for the program. The students were not allowed to use the Internet or iPad cameras, but the computers came pre-loaded with reading materials and comics. The author discusses collecting data from surveys, reporting to program funders, and adding magazines to iPads.
