- Abstract
INTRODUCTION: The therapeutic possibilities for solving dental crowding are numerous and extensively reported in the orthodontic literature. The expansion of dental arches, interproximal wear, dental extractions and disjunctions are the main alternatives presented to patients in order to solve this malocclusion. OBJECTIVE: To report and discuss the treatment of a young adult patient with severe lower crowding in which the osteogenic distraction procedure in the mandibular symphysis was indicated. CASE REPORT: An orthodontic-surgical treatment was performed, with emphasis on the patient’s complaint. Diagnosis, planning and results obtained showed an improvement in dental occlusion, smile arc and facial harmony. Results shown include 5-year post-treatment records. CONCLUSION: Among the various treatment options to solve cases of negative dental arch discrepancies, the surgical alternative proved to be very favorable for the case in question, responding to the patient’s wishes and being functionally stable.
