- Title
Underage Drinking and the Drinking Age.
- Authors
MAIN, CARLA T.
- Abstract
The article discusses laws pertaining to the consumption of alcoholic beverages in the U.S. and examines the phenomenon of underage drinking. Since 2007, a nonprofit agency called Choose Responsibility has been advocating for the repeal of laws that set 21 as the mandatory minimum age for drinking within the nation. In conjunction with Choose Responsibility, Middlebury College president emeritus John McCardell circulated a petition that called for elected officials to reexamine these laws. The author examines how U.S. drinking policy has evolved and the ways in which organizations such as Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) have influenced the process. Correlations between alcoholic consumption and sexual assault are examined.
