- Abstract
The article presents a study which provides information on the sources that provide scientific information to children. The study was conducted in a suburban elementary school. The questionnaire constructed by the investigator dealt with three categories of sources of scientific information that children used. In one category children were provided with a list of sources; in another the children had to list the sources and in the third one children listed sources that they felt contributed to their knowledge of the topics treated in their daily science class. The findings reveal that the children at the fourth, fifth and sixth grade levels seemed to depend upon three sources of scientific information-the science textbook, the teacher and class activities. It was found that children listed sources more frequently when they are suggested. The sources that children felt contributed to their knowledge were teachers, the science textbook and reference materials. Although experiment as a source was listed consistently in the list, it was not listed by many children. A very small number of children listed audio-visual aids as a source of knowledge.
