- Abstract
This article investigates a comprehensive exploration of the history, resistance and identity of the African diaspora, focusing particularly on the propaedeutic study of quilombola culture in Brazil. The overall aim of the research is to investigate the evolution of the first quilombos in Brazil, shedding light on their crucial role in safeguarding Afro-Brazilian culture, defending rights and recognizing their fundamental contribution to the rich tapestry of cultural diversity in the country. Through an interdisciplinary approach that integrates the knowledge of historians, anthropologists and educators, this research underlines the profound significance of quilombos as powerful sites of cultural, social and political resistance against colonial oppression and exploitation. Scholars such as Adelmir Fabiani, Kabengele Munanga and Nilma Lino Gomes stress the need to recognize and elevate the voices and narratives of quilombola communities. They emphasize the resilience and capacity of these communities to defend and pass on ancestral traditions in the face of widespread marginalization and discrimination. By exploring the enduring legacy of quilombos as bastions of resistance and cultural preservation, this study seeks to underline their fundamental role as active agents in the preservation and promotion of Afro-descendant identity. Furthermore, this research underlines the need for educational and policy initiatives that defend the resilience, autonomy and cultural heritage of quilombola communities. It advocates a conscious approach to promoting awareness of the historical and cultural significance of quilombos, with a view to cultivating a more inclusive and equitable society. Future research could delve into the various forms of resistance within quilombos and explore their contemporary relevance in Brazilian society, with the aim of formulating more holistic and egalitarian public policies that honor and empower these communities.
