- Abstract
Introduction: Cholecystitis is an inflammation of the gallbladder usually resulting from obstruction of the cystic duct caused by a calculation (cholelithiasis). The definitive treatment option is cholecystectomies, which can be elective or urgent depending on the clinical condition of the patient. Objective: To describe the epidemiological profile of hospital admissions for Cholelithiasis and Cholecystitis in the State of Piauí between 2017 and 2021. Methods: This is a descriptive, retrospective study with a quantitative approach in which data were collected in DATA-SUS. The variables considered in this work were: gender, age group and type of service. Results: There were 19,125 cases of hospitalization for cholelithiasis and cholecystitis during this period. The year that presented the most cases was 2019, with 4,789 (25%) and with the fewest cases was 2020, 2592 cases (13.55%). Females were the most affected, 15,051 cases (78.69%). Regarding the nature of care, there were 13,211 (69%) elective cases and 5,914 (31%) urgent cases, with a significant decrease in elective cases in the year 2020 (1457 cases) and 2021 (1956 cases). Conclusion: From the study carried out, there was a decrease in the number of hospitalizations in the period 2020 and 2019, during the covid-19 pandemic, since elective hospitalizations were limited. However, urgent cases remained unchanged. In addition, there is an exacerbated predominance in female individuals, with a higher incidence between 30 and 39 years old, representing 22.79% of female cases. In this context, it is worth mentioning how covid-19 has impacted elective hospitalizations, usually for cholecystectomy.
