- Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on patients with knee arthrosis who were waiting for arthroplasty. Methods: Evaluation of 87 patients who had elective total knee replacement surgery postponed during the COVID-19 pandemic who were in the surgery queue by SUS (Sistema Único de Saúde) through telephone interview with questions about willingness to operate during the pandemic, quality of life, and application of a knee function questionnaire. Results: Complete evaluation with 60 patients. Willingness to surgery decreased significantly with the onset of the pandemic (p<0001). Twenty-four (40%) of patients had already been affected by COVID- 19. Fifty-nine patients(98.3%) stated that knee arthrosis already affected their life before the pandemic started, and 50 patients (83.3%) responded that waiting for surgery during this pandemic period made their quality of life more impaired (p=0.008). When we compared this group of patients with a group of 60 patients that we evaluated in this same outpatient clinic, 2 years before the pandemic started, we found better results in the group waiting for surgery during the pandemic (p<0.0001). Conclusions: Knee arthrosis patients awaiting surgery during the pandemic reported worsened quality of life and less willingness to undergo surgery, yet 76.6% would still accept hospitalization for surgery. We did not identify worse functional outcomes in the group studied compared to patients awaiting surgery before the onset of the pandemic.
