- Abstract
This article discusses a retrospective case-control study that compares the prevalence of psychiatric illness in young patients with type 1 diabetes and proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) who undergo either pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) surgery or panretinal photocoagulation (PRP) laser treatment. The study found that patients who underwent surgery had a higher prevalence of psychiatric diagnoses compared to those who received laser treatment alone. The article emphasizes the need for further research to understand the relationship between PDR and psychiatric illness and highlights the importance of physicians and ophthalmologists being aware of the potential impact of psychiatric illness on diabetic control.
