- Title
Rhetorical Invention and the Transformation of 'We Shall Overcome'.
- Authors
Murphy, Troy A.
- Abstract
This essay examines the historical transformation and rhetorical dimensions of the civil rights anthem "We Shall Overcome." The author argues the song exemplifies the social, collectivist character of rhetorical invention and the process by which a public is invented and constituted through identifiable rhetorical action. Both lyrical and musical elements of the song's transformation are detailed to illustrate the sociality of invention and how arenas of social interaction cultivate effective rhetorical invention and facilitate the emergence of counter publics.
